1976 and 1978 honda gl1000 Interchangeable

Post by Kbkc2002 »

Recently bought what I was told was a 78 Gl1000 as a parts bike, just found out it is a 76! I was hoping to use mostly electrical stuff like the gauges, the headlight and some wiring. The seat and the lights and the hand controls. Is that possible or am I in trouble. Please any help or info is more than appreciated. Thanks

Many things are the same, many are different. You can go to a parts fiche on sites like Partzilla.com and compare part numbers. Some parts can be adapted to fit either but things like gauges, turn signal mounts, tailliights etc are different. You probably have already seen that the faux tank, with built in gauges on the 78 is very different to the 76 as are wheels, speedo sender (different sides). Some plastics are different, the seat will fit but a bit different, the exhaust is different, in all too many differences to list here. Go to a parts fiche, do some research on your own and cross check part #'s. You will get lots of usable parts off your 76 but if I were buying a parts bike would have looked for a 78 or 79. YMMV.
