1977 GL1000 Trouble Shifting Gears

Post by josh.anderson »

Hello, my 1977 GL1000 just started not shifting into gears. I read over a previous thread on here titled '76 GL1000 won't go into gear' which was helpful, but I still have a few questions. What is happening is this; the shift drum stopper is getting "stuck" on top of the pins in the selector drum instead of dropping down in between them. I believe that the hairpin spring is supposed to bring the shift stopper drum to its proper location, which is in between the pins and not on top of it. Also, the claw lever (which is directly in front of the hairpin spring) seems to be much looser than I expect that it should be. So, do you think the problem with the shift drum stopper getting stuck on top of the pins is caused by the hairpin spring being worn?
AND, will the case need to be split in order to replace this spring? Thank you

I wanted to edit my above post, but could not find the edit button anywhere. What I referred to as the 'claw lever' above is actually the Positive Stopper according to my shop manual.
