Whinning Speedo

Post by W109driver »

Hi.
Another issue.
The Speedo whines really badly.
Like way above all other noise when riding.
Disconnected the cable at Speedo end and the noise stopped.
Am I right in thinking it has got to be head or could it still be cable but just quiet because it hasn't got any resistance by the Speedo on it now?

My Haynes manual say Speedo is a non refurbishing part and has to be replaced. True?

Opinions welcome.

They are not designed to be taken apart, but.....if you're careful, it's quite easy. The chrome ring is what holds it together and that has to be prised up, all the way round, very gradually, until you can pull the two halves apart. Once you have cleaned / lubricated the internals and rejoined the two halves, you will have to carefully crimp the ring back. This won't be visible once the Speedo is mounted back in the chrome surround.

What greases would you recommend.?
Someone said Graphite grease for the cable...... Is that the dark CV joint grease?

A THIN layer of any grease will do the job, but, personally, I have used Graphite lube made for locks. It's an aerosol spray, but the liquid part is just a 'carrier' for the graphite. It evaporates to leave a slippery graphite coating which won't attract dirt.

My speedo did the same thing. I googled the problem and one of the responses was the fact(?) that the noise is most commonly a result of a brass bearing or bushing right where the cable connects to the guage wanting some TLC. They recommended disconnecting the cable, removing the speedo, turning it upside down, and dribbling a FEW drops of very light oil like 3 in 1 (or maybe graphite?) around the bushing. Then use a small screwdriver to rotate the bushing a few times to work the lube in. Put everything back together and see how it goes.

I must say that it worked for me.

Thanks for replies guys.
I went for the easiest option recommended. Lol.
Used some graphite grease and some white grease on up turned speedo. Worked it in using a battery drill.
All back together.
Only did 3 mile ride up to 50mph. But no noise!

Excellent, Praise be to Allah and you guys! Lol.
