Low compression on all four, good power, no smoke.

Post by leonardhcross »

Hello all. As I continue work on my 76 ltd.edition, I am puzzled at today's compression readings. Months ago, before putting the bike on the road, I tested compression. All four were between 105 and 110. Now, after driving for a few hundred miles, I re-tested in hopes that the rings may have re-seated and that compression might be up around 140. (To be clear, the bike had only gone two years without any driving). Testing procedures were all correct.....engine warm, throttle open, choke knob in, all plugs out, gas off, battery charger on. The readings are the same....105 to 110. Plugs looked great.
When I first tested, I followed up with a second "wet" test and the readings didn't budge. So, I have low compression in all four. I am not burning oil except at start-up. As I drive hard, I throttle down aggressively to see if any oil gets sucked up into the combustion chamber. I don't see any blue smoke. I am having a blast and the bike seems to have plenty of power so I don't feel compelled to do anything. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks winguyjo. I have been reading about the "hose" effect. So, may try a test using a press in guage with no hose. I'll keep you posted.
