GL 1000 oil recommendation

Post by robdot1964@gmail.com »

I recently spent the winter putting together a 79 GL 1000. Only 20000 miles on this old girl. All my other vehicles run on Mobil 1 full synthetic but the auto store seems to have only a few conventional types of oil. What are you guys using?

Do they make a 10W 40? Or should I use a different grade?

Most common answers you will get are (in no particular order)

Rotella T6 5w-40
Rotella T4 15w-40
Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-40
Honda oil (10w-30 or 10w40)

You will also get several for some motorcycle specific oils (Castrol, Valvoline, Amsoil, etc) or even just to use any HEDO (diesel) oil.

The biggest factor is to not use any oil with friction modifiers that will cause issues with a wet clutch.

I have used all of these with good results, ended up with Rotella T6 5w-40 because, it shifts better, stays clean, and the costs are very competitive compared to the special blends like Amsoil.

$22/gallon nearly everywhere

I just now finished servicing my Bad Boy Zero Turn mower, and they Specify 10w30 full Synthetic in their engines.
So, I had 2.0 gallons left in a jug of Rotella T4 10w-30, which is what I used to service it with last spring.

should be the exact amount needed.... it is now cooling off from a 2 minute run, and leaving it on Level Ground so I can pull the dipstick, and check for Proper Level.

Does that 10w-30 have friction modifiers? 🤔
I'm not so sure about an inner child, but I have an inner idiot that surfaces every now and then..

Thanks for the help. I ended up with RotellaT5 15w 40. I noticed immediately that the shifting was greatly improved.
