E10 petrol? Gasoline.

Well, in the UK we have finally switched from E5 to E10 petrol/gas.
This means that the ethanol content of petrol has gone from 5% to 10%.
It is also warned that many old vehicles will not run on E10.

I just wondering if there's any experts who could tell me what is the actual problem?
is it tank seals, is it valves/heads, is it fuel pipes?

For the time being we still have E5 high octane fuel.
But I imagine this won't last forever. And and it is possible that some fuel stations would not carry that.
What would happen if you are caught with no choice but to use E10?

BLUF if you run your engine often, you should be fine. If you have a very old engine, add some top end lubricant such as Marvel Mystery Oil. If you're not going to run the engine for a while, drain the petrol.

Neither do I. For the amount of time any gasoline spends in my tank the difference has been none to negligible and not worth the expense of time find the ethanol free gas nor the $$ difference.

I agree. IMHO the extra alcohol effects the storage time only. For normal season I use 10% as that is what is most available here. For the winter layover I make sure and have the tank newly filled with premium fuel which is 100% in this area. A bit more $ but that way I am sure that the ethanol is out of my bike for the 6 month long winters.

Your bike will be perfectly happy on E10, which is pretty much all that is available here. Even my '77 GL1000 ran well on it. I, too, don't notice any particular difference between E10 and non-ethanol fuel other than cost.

I've serviced a number of small engines like chain saws and lawn mowers for friends that have had carburetors gummed up from being stored extended period (years) with ethanol fuel in them. These will run fine on E10, but the fuel should be drained from carburetors and tanks when put up for storage. Even non ethanol will go bad after years.

+1 on non-ethanol fuel for extended storage (like 4-6 months) otherwise the E10 will be OK. Here the climate is such that I'm able to use a tank or two of fuel thru the winter, so I do not do any storage procedure on my bikes. And the lawnmower never fails to start on first pull after being put up for the winter with E10.

my son has two Honda EU2200i a/c generators.

he allows them to run until the carbs are dry, and then pours in Stabil and cranks them for a few seconds.

his set for long periods of time, so he has to make sure they will start when he wants them


I have a 10KVA emergency generator, and only use Pure Gas in it.
Turn off the fuel valve and let it run until it quits by itself,
it has always started when I needed it, even once after 3 years in between times.

Regular unleaded gas here in MI has 10% ethanol. I switched to recreation fuel (gas) last year and the bike starts easier and runs better. The octane is a little higher than regular. The downside is about a buck a gallon more, but I only ride <1000 miles a summer so it makes little difference.

Is recreation fuel/gas ethanol free gas? I haven't heard the term recreation fuel before.

Yes, no ethanol and 91 octane. I use it in all my small engines (even the 2-strokes) and it keeps them from gumming up and having problems with the ethanol. The old Wing was worth a try and it seems to run better. There are only two stations (Shell, BP) around here that I know sell it, so you might have to google it for your location.

Same thing we have here around Oologah Lake,
the Marina and the Convenience stores, all are "Phillips 66", carry 91 Octane Non-Ethanol.

our little convenience store in Oologah, converted their 91 octane E-10 pumps to 91 Non-Ethanol E-0
so they only have 87 E-10 and 91 E-0 now

the little farm store north of me, just simply switched over to 87 E-0 on all of the pumps, no Ethanol at that station period. Their prices run about $0.75 per gallon more to $1.25 gallon more, depends on the time of the month, maybe gasoline is female?

When on a trip, I fill my bike up with whatever gas I find along the way. But I always try to arrive home with as little gas as possible, and fill up just before I get home at a local station that has ethanol-free gas. I also use that to fill all my gas cans for my small engines.
