new to me 78 1000, almost 'barn find' condition

Post by kotkinjs1 »

Hi all,

Took a gamble on an out of state 78 GL1000 on a decent price and took delivery of it today. Little rougher than the photos showed (of course) and it's definitely been sitting for a longish while but with judicious choke it actually idled for a little while until some overheating and coolant overflow. But that's not what I need to ask first.....I can address that with some troubleshooting later. 2 things first:

First, the frame around the kickstand is rusted and 'peeling away' for lack of a better term. See photos. How screwed am I? It's on the center stand because I don't think it's even able to support the weight on the kickstand. Is this at all repairable? Or am I forsworn to use the center stand from here on out? Or is this going to be a structural issue that'll doom the bike?

Second, it's got aftermarket coils and I'm not sure what's going on where the points are supposed to be. Is that the Dyna conversion? Does anyone know 'Andrews Products' for coils and how reliable they are?

As I get time and money to start on this new project I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions. :)

I would check underneath the bike for more rust, especially around the center stand, and make the judgement if the subframe needs to be replaced. The bike won’t be safe to ride in my opinion, if the frame’s structural integrity is shot. ... I-nZ1vw4eM

The points have been replaced with an electronic ignition. You can test the coils and timing with procedures in the service manual.

Luckily that piece of frame is replaceable which might be even cheaper than having a shop repair it. As to Andrews, I remember them making cams and other parts for HD's back in the day, quality stuff.
Telling a man his motorcycle is pretty is like telling him his **** is cute.
