1000 body and an 1100 engine and carb questions

Post by kotkinjs1 »

Hi all, need some help here. Sorry in advance for the long post. I made one of those purchase decisions that can best be described as a 'learning experience.' A 1978 GL1000 off eBay from another state. Looked good but if course it's got some issues. Nothing too bad I don't think yet aside from the major new-to-me GL stuff (need to solder the yellow stator wires - one's burnt out, need to replace the original dogbone fuse, timing belts, probably replace thermostat along with all the fluids). I think it's been sitting for a while. BUT, the one issue that I did not understand until I received it was that it's got an engine swap - a gl1100 engine in the 1000 body. It's got the dyna type ignition 'upgrade' so that alleviated the main issue it seems in squeezing the 1100 engine into the 1000 frame. BUT BUT, I'm not sure about the carbs. I think they're 1000 carbs? On a 1100 engine? I don't know why the PO would've done that but oh well. If that's the case I think my best option is to source a set of proper 1100 carbs and rebuild them or go the single carb conversion route? I think Randak's page said earlier carbs on a later engine is a definite no-no.

Or, should I just take a loss and try to sell this? I'm hoping all it needs is dealing with the carb issue and then the regular small fixes here and there to get it on the road. But if this is a major $$ project I should probably cut my losses.

If you have GL1000 carbs on an 1100 engine, in proper repair they will probably perform much better than a single carb conversion.

Look for a model number on the carbs. three numbers and a letter (kinda like "711A" or something like that). There's people here that can identify what year/model the carbs are.

I'm quite happy with the performance and simplicity my single carb setup is giving me, the gas mileage, not so much. Given the choice I'd go with the stock carbs BUT if money is tight a single carb is the way to go. Avoid the Empi Chinese knock off carbs, mine is pretty much trashed with only about 10k miles on it and leaking from every mating surface on it. I've got a freshly rebuilt genuine Solex ready to bolt on with some smaller jets coming in the mail today, I'm gonna make this work come hell or high water!

I mentioned this on the other site however: If the bike has a Dyna type ignition it has gl1000 heads also. With the 1000 carbs and heads you shouldn't have a problem.

So if 1000 heads, then 1000 camshafts, valves, tickets, etc? It has 1100 valve covers.... are those just interchangeable on a 1000 head?

Yup, found the carb code, 769A, so 1978 carbs.

Can't say that I know this based on experience but it seems to me rejetting the carbs could get you awfully close to perfect. Most if not all the bikes I've worked on over the years had minor differences between models, tire sizes, sprocket ratios etc in order to come into compliance with EPA standards, that was a big deal during the late 70's/early 80's and still is in states where emissions testing is mandatory to get your tags.

That's a good point - are you sure it's a 1100 engine? And not just a 1000 engine with 1100 valve covers?

Yessir - engine s/n dates to '82.
