I Need an OEM Muffler for a 75

Post by RichColano »

Hello
I am new to the group. I have many bikes, currently I am restoring a 75 GL1000 to factory specs and appearances. I am in need of a new reproduction or a good used oem unit. Has anyone got one For sale or a lead to one. many thanks !

Hi,
From 2014-2015 I restored my (that time already in excellent condition) 1975 GL1000 K1.
It was stored and untouched in my garage for 31 years.
It had only 10.600 mls on the odo.....all parts incl. original paint was in excellent condition.
Already that time, but now even worse, the chance to find a OEM NOS muffler, buddy seat, rear spring / dempers is nearly zero.
The situation for these and many other used parts is, sorry to say........grim.
It will be even very difficult to find many more or less usable other parts.
In 2016 I could grab a OEM NOS muffler for $ 1.350,-....a lot of money that time.....I did not hesitate for a second and bought it on the spot.
I keep it in store as a reserve 2nd OEM muffler.

The company CMS *** a couple of years ago had the last in the world available OEM NOS muffler, that time at a list price of $ 3.600,- excl chrome heat shields etc.
They now have none for a couple of years already and I expect this will last forever.
Your only chance will be a 2nd hand muffler, many in bad condition and always rather expensive.
The inner works of the GL1000 muffler is rather complicated and difficult to restore.........only examples that are at least reasonable from the outside are worth buying.
Sorry for my negative story, however that it is the regrettable situation with these nearly 50 years old GL1000's......

Hello Ruud
Good to know that you have an OEM muffler for your bike and keeping one in reserve, especially when another GL1000 owner is desperate to get hold of one. I am sure he will be pleased with the picture of your bike.

Rich, have you found an exhaust for your 1975 GL1000 yet? IF you are still searching I have one that I'll consider selling.

I do have one that I am considering selling. I am not sure what the value of it is because it is not in perfect condition. I'll try to post some pics when I get a chance.

What are you thinking for cost? I’m in Canada so would need it shipped…not sure if that’s an option for you?

The cost is the part that I'm having trouble with. I know these can be extremely difficult to find, but I also realize this exhaust is not in perfect condition. Although its not in poor condition either. Let me see if I can find something comparable to get an idea of it's value.

I have one for sale. Looks to be nearly mint condition. Don’t know if it was ever mounted. Comes in a Honda factory box. Can get pictures if you are interested.

Hey - I know the thread is older. Just wondering if you still have the exhaust for sale?

Thanks!

Hopefully you will find it available. If not, check ebay. You can also try searchtempest.com it is an 'assist' with Craigslist in that it allows you to search by area rather than 'local'. If you're real desperate :( you can search NATIONWIDE.

Either way, don't rule out non-running parts bikes. Based on what knowledgable folks ask for the muffler alone you could very easily get a whole bike for less money. It could be a bit of a pain, but buying a parts bike would get you your muffler, capture many rare parts for backup or resale, and maybe even sell what's left. I shudder to think one would have to send a 'Wing to salvage, though..

Good luck.

Wow. You shouldn't have much trouble selling that treasure trove.

Seems there are not many first generation Goldwings in the Sacramento CA area. At a bargain price plus the seven boxes of spare parts and no takers so far.

Anyone in here still looking for an OEM muffler? I have a '75 GL1000 with 25k original miles. Lots of storage time in a barn. I had the mufflers restored by a local custom exhaust shop as one of the mounting studs broke. Otherwise were in good shape. Now, they've had new studs and stainless flanges installed and I've repainted the black and polished the chrome. I'm finishing a resto on it and think I've decided to go the custom route so I don't value the OEM look/sound and I see some of you do.

Let me know if you're still interested and I'll post pics and can see if you want them.
