No start solonoid only clicks one time

Post by Sterlingt7 »

Hello everyone, I recently purchased a 82 GL1100 and I have a no start/no crank problem that has been there since I purchased the bike. I've put in a new battery and a new starter relay/solonoid and the privious owner replaced the starter last year he only drove it 33 miles during the time he owned it....so the starter is basically new also. I can jump the solonoid/relay and it starts I can also push start it.....starts great using these 2 methods, but when I try to use the start button the solonoid clicks one time and that's it. It does not crank at all only clicks one time. The shops around here don't work on bikes this old. Does anybody have any advice on what might be causing this or what area/system I should try and check next. I would appreciate any help or advice you can give me. Thanks everyone

If you can jump the solenoid terminals to start it, then you just need to check that the solenoid gets both a start signal and a ground. If you bought an aftermarket solenoid, most of those are wired differently than the OEM. It will still work, you just have to swap some wires at the plug.
Are you getting a click each time you press the start button, or just the first time?

Thanks for your reply, it clicks one time each time I press the start button and when I try to jump the starter relay/solonoid it doesn't do anything no sparks no noise. The headlamp dims when jumping it but that's about it

I do have a aftermarket solonoid and I'm very curious to know more about that so I can check it out.

I'm confused. You say you can start it by jumping the solenoid, then you say jumping the solenoid does nothing but dim the headlight.

When I first got the bike I was able to start it by jumping the solonoid, but now when I try it doesnt do anything no sparks, no noise and no crank. It has power, when I turn the key all the lights come on like normal. Sorry I confused you.
