gl1000 valves
Doing a head gasket replacement on 76 gl1000 the valves don't leak down in any way vacuum and leak tested.so I know that these valves have a stellite coating on them , so can they be lapped? Or should I considering they don't leak.also I'm going to replace the seals so will it harm the valves if I pull them to clean carbon off the top of them

Re: gl1000 valves
If they are air tight, there is no point in lapping them.

Re: gl1000 valves
back in the day, honda said to NOT lap valves. if they have pits, replace them and do the push out, hard tap going back in, in a few times. wont hurt a bit to disassemble the valves , clean, replace seals. just stay off the seat and face. good time to check spring pressures.

Re: gl1000 valves
This is what I do, use valve spring tool to remove springs, cotters and valves. Layout all parts so they go back in exactly same place. Take valves to my drill press and carefully remove all carbon and polish with mothers polish/ scotch brite and 2000 grit wet dry sandpaper. I clean heads with lacquer thinner and rag. I seat/ lap the valves with polish so I am not really lapping anything just removing crud and cleaning. Then check all your valves and springs. If all good install new seals and put it all back together
