Don't you have the service manual?
You need to remove the radiator fan to make some room. Personally, I dislike skinned knuckles so I would remove the radiator, too. Then you can give it a good flushing out while it is off. The thermostat housing is now easy to access. Remove the two bolts holding the cover. Be sure to use a new o-ring. Because it's not a 2 minute job to get to, I usually test the replacement thermostat in a pan of hot water, just to be sure before installing. I've had more than one brand new one that doesn't work right or hangs up when closing.

Thanks.
No I dont have a manual for my 79.
Your instructions helped, it wasn't too bad of a job to do. I ended up using a compatible Honda Car thermostat and it's working fine now.
