Bike lurches and stalls the second I put it in gear

Howdy peeps, first time posting. I have a 1982 GL1100 Interstate, 35000 original miles, traced back to original owner, that I was recently given. Actually have 2 GL1100's now, my neighbor gave me an '82 GL1100 Standard this past weekend. He doesn't want to spend any time or money, to get it running, just shy of 53000 miles on it. Now on the Interstate one, I spent sometime and a little money replacing the battery and making sure it was going to run, before continuing on to the first repair, of which was rebuilding the rear caliper, that was locked up. So now I have moved onto my next item, I have it running nicely, although when I attemt to put it in gear, the bike just lurches forward a spit second and shuts down. Well it shuts down much faster than a split second. So I figured maybe I need to adjust the clutch cable. I followed what the manual states for adjusting it, although the bike still jerks hard and shuts down, as soon as I attempt to put it in gear. Help me OBI-Wan, You're my only hope. Sorry, Just a little humor. I would appreciate any assistance, as the repair manual really doesn't cover what to do next. Thanks for any and all replies. Tim

Sounds like the clutch is stuck from sitting. The plates are stuck together with old gunky oil. It's a common complaint for bikes that have been sitting. Search here for threads devoted to ways to get things unstuck. Some are easy, some are hard. It all depends on how lucky you are.
