Rev counter glass replacement

Post by Mudge »

Hi,
Can someone please tell me how I can remove and replace the cracked glass in my 1976 gl1000s rev counter?.
I've separated the two halves and just can't seem to figure out how to remove the glass it's held in place by a light blue inner casing that pushes the glass against a rubber gasket/seal against the black outer casing but there no obvious way to separate the casings and glass to allow me to install a new glass and seal.
I've looked on YouTube but failed to find a video of how to sort out my cracked glass issue.

The rubber seas is probably sticking. Gently place a knife between the rubber and the upper half. You dont want to damage the rubber seal.

I hope this helps.

Carefully pry the pieces apart. You can get replacement parts from a place in the UK at https://www.cb750faces.com . The seal that you are trying to save is not needed in my opinion. I use a thin layer of rubber contact cement on both halves and this works better for me.

Hi, thanks for the description and info regarding the two halfs and the UN necessary rubber gasket, just one other question how do you compress the centre band without denting it?, I've buggered up two rings so far also are the cb750 half cases the same as the gl1000?, I have a spare Speedo and rev counter but the outer case halves are in pretty poor shape.

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me regarding the outer cases.
Regards
Vic

I use a Dremel with a thin blade to cut the band and then use a large band clamp to reattach it. I tighten the clamp to where the two cut ends meet and use a dab of JB Weld behind the chrome band. You have to find the right clamp that won't damage the chrome band and you could use a piece of tape if you are worried about scratching it.
