Fluid changes & type advice wanted

Post by jimalston »

Hi, very new to this and to having a GL1000.
Can someone tell me how much engine oil I need to put in, I will also be changing the oil filter?
Can someone tell me how much antifreeze/ coolant I need to put in and what type of fluid - there seems to be so many on the market?
Thanks in advance, Jim

When the engine is completely drained and the oil filter has been replaced, the GL1000 will take between 3 1/2 and 4 quarts. It is best to keep the GL1000 filled about halfway in the sight glass instead of to the full mark. You can use motorcycle oil or Shell Rotella. The T4 is 15-40W and will work fine or you can use 20-50W motorcycle oil. You can also use the Rotella T6 5-40W synthetic with good results. About a half quart of oil is usually in the rear compartment and this oil is not drained out, so you typically only add between 3 and 3 1/2 quarts when doing an oil change. The antifreeze you use can either be genuine Honda antifreeze or you can go to Walmart or an auto store and look for 1 gallon of the 50/50 mix that does not contain any phosphate or silicate. When completely empty, the GL1000 will take almost a gallon and that will include filling the plastic tank.

Owner’s manual says 10w 40 for the oil.

Hi, Thanks got that. I also read somewhere else not to use any form of synthetic. Jim

You can use dino, synthetic, or blends. What you can't use is any oil with friction modifiers. Bad for the wet clutch. Make sure the bottom of the API donut is blank, nothing like "Resource Conserving". It should also meet or exceed JASO MA or MA2 rating.
