Coolant system pressure test on GL 1000

Post by Gregsky »

Hello Everybody

I have just joined to the forum :)
Recently I have bought GL 1000 79 with sidecar , it has 1100 engine with 1000 heads. There was a problem with water mixing with oil and vice versa... Previous owner said he replaced head gaskets , so i did water pump ( new OEM) and washers , orings etc. Flushed coolant system 10 times to get clean it off oil , then replaced engine oils 3 times to flush the engine. Did compression test : 145 , 149, 152, 152 Psi , did carbs sync. Could not test ride because we have winter now... any way i noticed my antifreeze level drops in reservoir , so i top it up. Checked the oil and it looks like im still getting coolant leak into engine oil...
The Question is, what is the best way to find a leak? There is no signs of antifreeze around the bike , can tell about the smoke from exhaust , cause its cold outside ( - 2 celsius) there is no sweet smell either. I suppose the next step is pressure test of coolant system ? I was thinking to get the drain bolt out of water pump and screw in kind of adapter so i can put my gauge on it and pressurise the collant system. Can You advise me test time and pressure and how to proceed further?

I drive a gl 1000 so am unfamiliar with the 1100 engine but if you are sure about the coolant flow with the head gasket l suggest that you consider the water pump. There is an inside and outer seal. Failure of the outside seal results in antifreeze at the weep hole. Eventually, continued weeping affects the inside bearing and inside seal resulting in water in the oil. Search YouTube for gl 1000 or gl 1100 , water pump leak into oil.

While you can pressurize the cooling system and confirm that you have a leak, it usually won't tell you where it is.
Since the engine has already has mix and match parts, I would lean towards just buying a good running used engine to get a fresh start.
If you don't mind spending a lot of time, pull the engine and tear it down. Between a good visual inspection, and pressure testing each component, you should be able to track down the problem.
There are a few ways to help track things down before you take out the engine.
Put a gauge on the cooling system, then pressurize each cylinder at TDC and see if the cooling system gauge rises. You can also pressurize the oiling system to check that.
Since the cooling system cycles between a slight vacuum and 10ish psi depending on where the leak is, the flow could be in one way or the other or both.

Recently i have pressurised the coolant system...I drained down antifreeze , put my gauge on it , pressurise to 1 bar. I could hear some air coming out if the engine. Next thing i removed both valve covers and then applied pressure again, i could hear lauder noise on the left hand side , also i noticed some antifreeze around cam shaft. I decided to fill up the coolant system with antifreeze and pressurise to 1 bar. As a result i noticed antifreeze driping from cam shaft rocker and also could see some liquid dripping down the engine where the head gasket is.
There are 2 bolts just undernath the camshaft , i suspect one of them is leaking.
