78 GL1000 parting out, anyone interested?
Hello,
I've finally decided to part out BETTIE IV, a black 1978 GL1000. It has a full VETTER fairing with lowers, trunk, and side hard bags.
It has a good Massachusetts title.
It's been parked in weather for 16 years, with the side bags taken off and stored inside a shed. All locks and keys work.
Has the VETTER CYCLESOUND that fits under the windshield, and I'll include a good Radio Shack pull-out stereo cassette deck, with a port to plug in a Walkman or similar if you want to play CDs. The best of 1980s technology.
The fairing has a crack on the inside face, but it's repairable should you find someone with a hot plastic welder setup.
The chrome rack on the trunk should be replated.
The VETTER mounts to fit the 78/79 year models come with the gear.
The bike itself is in poor condition, and the list of problems starts with a seized engine, with about 53K on the clock.
The frame is usable.
The clutch and transmission are both in good condition.
The water pump had been replaced before being parked, but there's no coolant in the system.
The stator/rotor were good, coil and distributor are good. Still has points in it.
Voltage regulator was good, it's a later one with the factory ground wire...the early ones had grounding problems.
AFAIK the radiator is good, but...
The fan switch was good. The radiator fan is good AFAIK. The coolant tank was good last time I looked.
It had driver floorboards, but those have disappeared with time due to rust. The foot lever is however in fair condition for those that want to get a floorboard setup. The original rear pegs are fair IIRC.
The fabric cover for the left fairing side is in tatters.
The fake side tank covers are there AFAIK. I think the right side lower cover is missing.
I don't know if the original tools are in the tool box.
It has good carbs, but at this point they would need to be gone through.
It has a K&N air filter in great shape...obviously, they never die. Clean and reuse, ad nauseam.
Wheels are in good condition, will clean up.
I had upgraded ALL wheel bearings when the original fronts got sloppy. Obviously the tires are beyond their safe usable age.
I likewise replaced the steering head bearings. Handlebars and controls are fair but weathered.
It has original mirrors.
It has a later 1980(?) front (plastic) fender... I liked it better than the original chrome one. Comes with original factory USELESS HOLE PLUG...yes, that's the Honda part name.
I replaced the original front master cylinder with one from a later 1980s Honda F1100F, as it was available to me in the bike shop I worked at back then; I liked the adjustable feature for pull length.
The rear master cylinder would obviously need to be rebuilt.
Front and rear brake discs are in good usable condition. The calipers can be rebuilt AFAIK.
All gauges worked when parked. The fuel tank has been kept empty, and fuel sender worked.
One fork tube weeps. Both are straight.
Rear drive train is good, and swing arm bearings are in fair condition.
Original tail light and rear turn signals are good. Front turn signals had been removed when the VETTER fairing got put on by the original owner.
Comes with a pair of good used exhaust mufflers stashed in the shed. The originals are toast.
Side and center stands are original.
Somewhere around here I have a Honda microfiche for the 1978 model year. I MAY have a Haynes manual for it.
Parked in a yard in Plymouth MA.
At least two strong guys, and trailer, or a pickup with a small crane, would be needed to take it away...it will not roll easily.
Not looking for much money for this, I just want to see usable parts taken to keep another bike on the road.
Maybe $500? The Vetter stuff alone should be worth that.

Hi! Nothing like timing!
I'm looking for a set of carbs for my GL1000. Please let me know how much you're asking for them and how much to ship to me (32950). I'm also interested in the mirrors.
Thanks in advance.
Feel free to text me: 321.557.5421.

Hi,
I will be starting a restoration of a 79 GL1000 soon. Do you still have the bike? If so, I will be reaching out to see if have certain parts.
Thanks!

Yep, still have it.
The carbs and mirrors are spoken for, PROVIDING I can get my crippled butt in gear.
What are you looking for?
I have a pair of used mufflers, bought them to install and never did. Fair/usable condition. $100 and shipping.
Side covers.
Tank cover.
Fuel tank, I think it's still good, I'll have to check again.
Tank gauge package, more.
Full VETTER fairing w/ lowers (AND Cycle Sound), trunk and saddle bags (removable, like luggage) all with matching keys, and wiring harness.
More, but right now I'm getting through physical therapy so I can ride again.

Re: 78 GL1000 parting out, anyone interested?
Good to know! I am picking up the bike on June 10th and will do a full inventory. The PO thinks the engine is seized, so it may be a lengthy project.
I know it has aftermarket pipes, so I am definitely interested in the stock setup. I may also need some electrical and mechanical components. The front master cylinder if shot and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Do you want to sell the Haynes manual? I ordered a printed shop manual on eBay, but it would be good to have another reference.
Thanks!

Also, what is the color and condition of the fake tank cover? If I can get it running, I would like to find a blue tank cover to use as a reference for paint matching.

I am interested in the front forks and front wheel. But I cringe at what the shipping charges would be to 77388

The front master cylinder on mine is from a 1980s Honda VF1100-F, it's adjustable for how far from the grip you want it to be.LLRelease wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2024 9:20 am Good to know! I have NO idea of it's condition, just keep in mind it's been out in weather for several years.
The exhaust mufflers are just the mufflers, not the manifolds, nor the clamps.
I'm keeping the Haynes manual, just the same.
NOTE: I have been late in doing gardening, and have hacked my way back to the bike...the Garden Gods have gone berserk this spring, and I have raspberry brambles over most everything. I may have to resort to a flame thrower...and no, I'm not kidding.

I'll check as I disassemble the bike. The wheel would be shipped sans tire, as it's just too old.RoadRunnerTX wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 5:58 pm I am interested in the front forks and front wheel. But I cringe at what the shipping charges would be to 77388
I had installed new wheel bearings before I parked the bike, all USA made.
So just the fork tubes and wheel?
Will go in two packages, but I'll check the tubes first to see if they are straight.

If anyone has the best/cheapest way to ship stuff, please let me know. I try like plague to avoid USPS.
Also looking for best way to pack stuff; I'm pretty good at this, but always open to suggestions.
I figure the following:
Fork tubes: wrapped in plastic, wrapped in corrugated cardboard, with foam blocks/cardboard to protect ends. That's how I got them, and it worked well.
Mirrors: Wrapped in bubble wrap, in heavy box with peanuts.
Carbs: Plastic bagged (twice, to keep peanuts out), wrap in foam, peanuts in heavy box.
Mufflers: Wrapped in plastic bags, wrapped in Corrugated cardboard, sealed with tape. Extra padding to protect ends.
I tend to send stuff with both an outside label and one inside, so the geniuses doing handling have a clue JUST IN CASE.

Re: 78 GL1000 parting out, anyone interested?
Honestly, I don't know for sure what all is missing. I got the bike as a bare frame and boxes. I was told that the front forks and wheel are missing for sure, but it might not hurt to have everything forward of the frame. I suspect that I don't have the front brake calipers, triple tree, etc.UncleLumpy wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2024 8:40 amI'll check as I disassemble the bike. I'm still interested in the carbs and mirrors shipped to 32950. Let me know how you pay you PayPal, CashApp, Venmo, etc.
