1978 GL1000 stalling after down hill engine braking

Post by Andrew Vu »

Hello,

I recently got a 1978 GL1000 that ran fine when I tested it in a flat neighborhood. Idle rpm is stable ~1k rpm after warming up with the choke fully pushed in.

Coming out of my neighborhood on a steep down hill, I closed the throttle to engine brake for 5 ish seconds, then pulled the clutch to down shift, and the engine stalled. I've repeated this to confirm it causes a stall. Sometimes it makes popping sounds.

I've stopped from similar conditions (2nd gear, 4k rpm) without engine braking by closing the throttle and pulling the clutch at the same time, and it returns to idle like normal.

My current hypothesis is something with the air cutoff valve - I'm going to look at it later.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments/concerns? Any feedback is welcome.

And a picture of the gl1000 attached :) goldwing family yay
