Rear wheel bearings

Post by jackR »

Hi guys restoring a 1975 GL1000 and have the rear hub apart not the final drive. I am a bit confused regard how the bearing setup works. The screw in bearing retainer screws in and retains the outer bearing then there is the collar spacer and the inner bearing is install up against the spacer. My question is what keeps the inner bearing up against the spacer, just the press fit of the bearing? seems a bit strange to me usually the spacer is held from both sides against the spacer.

The axle sandwiches that whole assembly.

I don't see how the inner bearing is retained just the press fit, I have checked the manual and parts fiche, everything is there.

Here is the breakdown.

The axle(2) presses against the collar(3), then the inner race of the bearing(25) then the spacer(8) then the inner race of the other bearing(24)

then the wheel spacer(11) and finally the driven gear assembly and the axle nut clamps the whole stack together.

Where is the wheel spacer, if it is inside the final drive then the inner bearing is nowhere near it, unless something is missing.

It slips over the axle as you put it together and is inside the drive flange and bears against the final drive gear. It's nothing more than a heavy wall tube. If you search here I seem to remember someone that was missing one and made a replacement from dimensions another owner provided.

Thanks very much for the help, I knew something was wrong thought that spacer (11) was inside the final drive, not sure why they didnt list it in the rear wheeel fiche. I will search for dimensions
