1975 GL1000 Front Wheel Bearings Replacement
I'm replacing the tires on my 1975 GL1000 and I would like to replace the front wheel bearings while I'm at it. I cannot figure out how to remove the bearing retainer. It is a circular threaded thing which I'm sure takes a special tool. I was tapping with a flat bladed screwdriver but it wont budge and I don't want to damage it. The only info I could find anywhere is that you have to drill out the two punch marks to get it out. Anybody know how to remove this? Thank you!

You can make a tool out of a socket with a bit of grinding. What you want to end up with is something that looks like this. Or just get the Honda tool.

It's standard threaded, correct? Lefty loose-ey?
I assume so because it's on the left side of the bike.

In a pinch, I have used the ends of a pair of needle-nose pliers shoved into the holes, then apply pressure and rotate.

Do I unbolt and remove the speedometer mechanism to get the axle out?

Re: 1975 GL1000 Front Wheel Bearings Replacement
While I have the front wheel off I am replacing the fork seals because the left one is leaking.
I was able to get the old seal out after a lot of struggle but I didn't see the ring under the seal. (see pic) Any idea if this is needed on the '75, and if so, is there a washer/ spacer I could substitute from the hardware store?
Also, do I put the pipe in the slider and then slide the new seal over it? What size PVC can I use as a fork seal driver?

Re: 1975 GL1000 Front Wheel Bearings Replacement
UPDATE:
Just closing the loop. I got the forks both rebuilt and even polished them up to boot. Holy cow! After 49 years those seals were in there they were part of the fork tube!
BTW, the spacer was there. It just got stuck to the fork tube so I let it stay there and replaced the seal and it's good to go.
Thanks!
