hi i have gl1000 from 1976 and somethimes puch electric start and nothing and another time is like is ok!!!
just explane have problem with part who control level of energie and acid of baterie evaporie!!!
put new acid but now few months have this problem !!!
think could be baterie what you guys think about this!!!

My guess is a failing start switch. All the headlight current flows through the start switch so they get carbon coated and work sometimes then later less and less. If it is the switch, you can verify next time it does not start. Take a screw driver and ground it across the starter solinoid large terminals and see if the starter turns. If it does, your switch on the right handle bar at least needs cleaning.
The starter solinoid is just rear of the battery.
Some owners of early GLs install head light relays to protect that switch from further damage.
