Re: 1980 goldwing or goldwing interstate?
The most obvious way to tell is that the Goldwing Interstate came with a fairing, trunk and pannier (saddle) bags, and the Goldwing Standard did not. That's the main difference.
That said, many Standards had aftermarket Vetter fairings and bags added to them.

Look at the gooseneck, serial number etc...are on there... and I think it should have it on there.

Easy way is Interstates horns are in the front, a standard's are on the sides...
you can go exactly .4 miles with the petcock turned off.

Unless someone (like me) has changed them.
I got tired of dealing with the horns in front of the radiator every time I had to pull the radiator, so I moved mine to the sides, inside the lower fairings.

Good call, that's where mine are, and have been for about 5 years. I moved up to louder(read ugly) horns and put them back in the "standard" place on my Interstate, behind the lowers...

I'd download the Honda service manual (if you don't have one already) and go through the engine removal/installation procedures before you start. It's not all that difficult, and it's a great way to get to know your bike.

ive done just that. man i dont know what i would do without this web forum you guys are the greatest. ive worked on all kinds of bikes but never a goldwing.now im an owner. i pick up the used engine tomorrow and i cant wait it is suppost to be sunny and 65- 70 degrees here this weekend and as long as ive been couped up i normanlly would jump on the "M"(M109R) and cruise all weekend but now that ive got the goldwing and the engine, im staying home all weekend and putting her back together. i cant wait to hear this thing run. ive bought 2 cans of seafoam to see if i can help the carbs on it, since they have set up since last august. i hope i can turn to you over this weekend for help if i need to know something. ill post pictures soon

Mshawn, depending on the age og the carbs and if you remove them, be sure to pop off the two screws that house the air-cutoff valves. They are of a diaphragm nature. Mine must have been 30 years old and the originals. A big gooey soupy rubbery mess is what I found. Hopefully your luck is better than mine.
