so Darth Vader sat in my garage over the fall of 2013 ... and at the start of 2014 my company sent be off to work on a project on the US west coast for 6 months ...

so the bike was put up for sale as it looked like another driving season (2014) would be lost with me being on the west coast ...

As it turns out a fellow Canuck from Alberta who is also a classic Honda MC enthusiast saw the ad and this project post and we have struck a deal and Darth Vader will be making its way out west later this year after he spends some time motoring around the Maritimes on it this coming summer....

I want to thank everyone for all of the positive comments, great technical help, and suggestions for this project ... it was a lot of fun and a great experience
for me ...

so what is next bike project for me ??? ....

I have bought a 1976 Honda GL1000 which has the engine torn apart ... so I will be putting that back together and will post my progress on this site... probably start this fall/winter... will be posting in the GL1000 forum...

Hey there Greg, this is Ryan. I had looked into your info because I wanted to make sure I had run my choke cable properly as I had already installed and completely removed the entire cooling system once and didn't want to do it again! As I had stated, a "friend", disassembled my bike for me while I was layed up and I didn't see any of it nor was anything labeled, etc! So since I've never done more than everage work getting old Trumpets and Nortons going again, this is quite the job for me. I really went to town. I powder coated everything gloss black-wheels, frame, both stands, handle bars, anything metal that came off got powder coated and I painted all my body work the ivory white of the old 1970's police servi-cars. Anyway I ended up reading your entire article and I am tired, I think your ideas just added at least a month of work, but it looks more interesting and enjoyable to do now that I've followed you! Thanks for the great pics and the every day guy language. By the way, I am heading to N.S. this summer. I just moved away from there in july of 2004. I lived on Burton Drive in Blackette's Lake on Cape Breton Island. It's just a bit of a ride out of Sydney toward Ski Banoin. Actually my Daughter went to E'Toile de L'Acadie in Sydney and the entire school went skiing every third Friday all day during the winter so since I was only 10 mins from the lodge I would just pick her up there at the end of the day! I sure do miss suppers in Baddeck and lunch at that place just outside of Cheti-camp where you could sit out back and eat your seafood chowder and watch the seals mess with the lobster traps! I lived just a little passed Rita McNeil's house on Blackette's Lake rd. Burton Drive was just near the end before it turned to gravel. I miss it so much up there! Well I need some sleep before the day starts and I think I am getting myself into a bench sync job now(See what you've went and done now eh!). Thanks bud and I'll keep you posted and I will also let you know when I leave to head up, maybe we can get together. I also sat here the other night trying to post some pics of my progress on my photo place but I'll be darned if I could figure it out. I tried to put a dozen pics about a dozen times and couldn't figure it out, couldn't find instructions of how to post pics(though in all honesty I did remember seeing a heading saying how to post pics but I wasn't looking for it then), so if you feel inclined to do so perhaps you could steer me in that direction now? Thanks Greg-most appreciatve, Ryan.

Greg,

I have just gone through your article. Great work and fantastic pics. I keep some "How To" articles printed out and in note books. I have added your R&R on the starter solenoid as I am having some trouble with mine. Normally I would just buy another solenoid and replace it as I would rather ride the bike than work on it. But you have inspired me to dig a little deeper before I try to find another one. I can't tell you how much those pictures mean to all of us. Keep up the good work and good luck with your future projects.

JJ and Ryan,

Thanks for the kind words...

I'm glad that you and others find the pictures/information helpful... It was a very enjoyable restoration project ... I learned a great deal... And I enjoyed posting the pics and write ups of what I did..

Also received a lot of support and positive comments and help from many forum members ..

I also sold the 1976 GL1000 project bike to James in Lantz NS, another Classic Honda MC enthusiast to finish... As I just didn't have the time and energy to put into a full engine rebuild...

My current winter bike project is a 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Mean Streak... A very different beast than the Honda GWs

Best of luck With ur bike projects as well..

Hi Greg. Nice job you're doing on your goldwing. I'm beginning the same project as you on an 81 gl1100 interstate. Complete bike with 25,000 miles on it. Sat inside for 12 1/2 years and 2 1/2 outside covered. Woodland creatures were making their home in this bike, so all of it must come apart. Have carbs off now soaking in kero solution. Rear wheel and gas tank out next. Wheels, brakes..... All the rest. I liked your tank cleaning method. Gonna try it out. I live in Connecticut in the lower 48. Also have a 98 bmw r1100r that I rode this past summer to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Quebec. I love Canada. Working on it and it looks like the same garage and the same chaos you've got. Just wanted to check in as it all looks very familiar. Thanks, jim

Greg - great project. Found the information on the rebuild of the fuel shutoff valve very interesting because the one on my '85 GL1200 LTD leaks when I go turn it off. Going to wait until end Feb before I tackle it. Best of luck on your next project. Cheers

Thank you Rednaxs60 and Jimhmiii for your kind words of encouragement and for spending time on this Goldwingdocs forum.

You will not find a better site for resources, information, support and dedicated members to keeping Goldwings on the road.
WingAdmin on this site is a saint as well.

Jimhmii glad you saw a piece of you as you saw the controlled chaos in my garage :-) I would love to own a BMW r1100r.. thank you for visiting in Nova Scotia!

Rednaxs60, the fuel petcock worked great / did not leak after flipping it over ! Good luck on that project.

I'm documenting my current bike project on vulcunforums.com under the VN1600 model and its called Greg's VN1600 Mean Streak Winter Project.

take care

Greg - good luck on your next project. I am documenting my winter maintenace o this forum under "1985 GL1200 LE Mantenance". It is going well, but it feels lke a minor refurbishment project. Did I read somewhere that you sailed on ASSINIBOINE. I did as well. Best of luck.

Rednaxs60,

Good to hear from a fellow shipmate. I served in Navy from Feb 1975 thru to Aug 1980, and was posted to HMCS Assiniboine in Jan 76, thru Sept 78.

Was a radioman/ships diver.

Good luck on your project, and I'll check out your post/thread as well.

Thanks for your service Rednaxs60...

I finished my Mean Streak project and have been enjoying riding it. No new bike restoration projects on the go this winter but you never know. Always nice to visit this forum and see what riders are working on

Take care
