Oil Pickup Screen

I have a service manual for 1980 to 1983 Goldwings. What I would like to know, is the oil pickup screen in the same place on a Standard wing as any other 1983? All I see on mine is a cover just ahead of my brake pedal, just before the right side heads.

That's it. You have to remove that cover to get to it. It's the same on all 1100 engines.

I'll have to look again, but the cover I'm seeing is sort of behind what looks like the fuel pump. It has four bolts, but I don't see prying the frame helping there. I will take another look at it, but this cold weather doesn't help in an unheated garage. Thanks from a newbie!!!

Greeting from Nova Scotia and another cold garage!

I just removed and cleaned my oil pick-up screen ... 3 of the four bolts that hold the cover on will come free and clear of the engine, however the bolt that is closest to the front of the bike cannot be removed because it interferes with the frame... I ended up using a hack saw to remove the bolt because I was confused / uncertain as to how to get it out ... I was told by WingAdmin that this 4th bolt can be removed by prying out the frame from the engine on that side to give you sufficient clearance to get the bolt out... you need to remove the large bolt that holds the frame to the engine and also loosen the engine/frame bolt at the rear of the engine ... gently pry the engine and frame apart with the crow bar ... then back out the 4th bolt.... remove the pry bar .... use a shorter bolt in that location to avoid having to use the pry bar the next time ... if you are not the 1st owner of the bike, the previous owner may have already done this and swapped the longer bolt for the short one... hope this helps... and good luck

I went out again and looked for it. It seems to be behind the bottom frame, and behind the exhaust pipes that go to the heads. Did you undo all that stuff to actually get to it. I'm not the original owner, I am the third owner. I will ask where I bought it, if they can tell me if they have done this to it for the previous owner. He always brought his there to get it serviced. I am a tinkerer, but not a mechanic, although I wish I were. Thanks for taking the time to reply!!!

Here's what the Honda service manual says:

1. Remove the bottom front engine bolt nut on the right side. Push the bolt out of the right frame tube. Loose the right bottom engine mounting bolt.

2. Remove three oil screen cover bolts, loosen the fourth until it touches the frame.

3. Carefully flex the frame and wedge a prybar between the frame and engine. Remove the fourth bolt and oil screen cover.

CAUTION: Do not flex the frame more than necessary to prevent frame damage. Also, be careful not to damage the engine case.

NOTE: Loose the left engine mount bolts if the frame cannot be flexed enough.

4. Remove the oil screen.

Installation:

1. Clean and install the oil screen.

2. Install the oil screen cover. Replace the original front oil screen cover bolt with one about 3mm shorter and the frame will not have to be flexed for future removal.

3. Remove the prybar, push the bottom front engine bolt back into places and install nut.

4. Torque the lower rear and front engine mount bolts to 44 ft-lb.

Just thinking, if I run a can of sea foam thru my engine, will that take care of cleaning the screen? Bob :mrgreen:

It depends on what is in the screen! If it's sludge...perhaps. If it's metal or clutch disc particles - not a chance.

what is the other cover, higher and to the right, with a solid plastic gasket behind it, almost directly behind the fuel pump. I need to know just before I may destroy it.

That is the cover over the final reduction gear. Not likely you will ever have to remove it.

They deleted the cover all together on 1200s, you have to split the engine cases to get to it so don't complain.

Well I don't have a 1200, and anyway, it's my bike so I'll complain if I want to ... :P :P :P

Am looking at a different approach: I have a snake cam, which I'll poke through the oil drain hole to see if it's possible to reach the screen with a piece of wire and scrape any junk off the underside. Looking at crankcase pics, it's not a straight line, but will take only a few minutes to see if this is possible.

I had 1 that got plugged a couple of times before I got all the material out, it was fibers from a cheapo oil filter. It would be fine for a few miles then the light would come on, I could shut the engine off and coast for a minute and the stuff would fall off the screen and I could go a little farther. I finally flushed it out through the pickup screen hole with some diesel.
