No spring or washer in my oil filter 81 GL1100
Hey folks, I'm changing the oil on my 81 GL1100 and when I removed the filter there was no spring or washer like in the DIY article. Can anyone tell me if this is ok for the 81? Thanks. Johnny

No, it's not. Without a spring and washer, your filter is essentially in bypass mode ALL the time - which means it is not filtering any oil. Your engine is running without an oil filter.Cousin Johnny wrote:Hey folks, I'm changing the oil on my 81 GL1100 and when I removed the filter there was no spring or washer like in the DIY article. My 82 was like that when I got it as well. Replacement springs and washers can be had from any Honda parts dealer - I got mine from Cyclemax, and while I don't recall the price, it was fairly cheap.

I looked it up at Cyclemax's OEM section for your bike:
Washer (part 4): part number 15414-300-000, $2.43
Spring (part 5): part number 15415-300-000, $2.75

Thanks for the reply and research. I appreciate it. I've already placed the order.

PS. How urgent is it to get that spring in. Can I wait 4,000 miles?

I'm basically a noobie on here but I would say its critical to have these parts. Without them, as WingAdmin said above, your essentially operating without a filter. Operating without a filter any longer than nessecary is a bad thing.
The spring and washer work in a manner which allows the filter to go into 'bypass mode' when the engine/oil is cold. Once the engine/oil warm up enough the spring/washer work together to engage the filter and allow the filter to do its job. No sprig and no washer means you are always in bypass mode and the filter never filters the oil.

Folks, just bought an 83 Standard, pretty good shape, minor problems as to be expected. Oil change was first order of business and found no washer in place. Spring was there so that's good.
Quick look thru my stash-o-stuff found nothing suitable so headed to Tractor Supply Company (TSC), the closest hardware source to me. Quick look thru the bins turned up nothing suitable, BUT... found a package back in machine parts which is almost perfect: 7-pack of Machinery Bushings, 7/8 ID (only slightly large and 14 gauge thick. Outside diameter is nearly perfect. Pack of 7 cost <drum roll please> $2.59 plus tax. SKU is 1833845, Part # S175054TSC.

Bottom line, I have 5 extras (keeping one as a spare.
) Drop me a note if ya need one.

Removed my '82 GL1100 Interstate oil filter today and noticed the washer was missing. Helpful to learn I could find a substitute locally.
Tractor Supply also has a 2 pack of the 7/8 X 14 GA washer for $1.49. SKU is 104048199.

I don't have a washer either, I keep forgetting before I change the oil so I never end up putting one in there. I think so long as you have the spring it's not so much of an issue. The washer seems like it's there just as something for the spring to sit on instead of resting against the filters rubber gasket. Next time maybe I won't forget lol
