Adding CBR coils to an '83
A lot of discussion on the various old Gold Wing forums about upgrading to CBR coils for a hotter spark. I bought a set, after reading everything, and have the bike apart to wire them in...but....I'm apprehensive..
?any one here done the swap? If you did, what were your conclusions? I have new plugs and plug caps; going to get some plug wire and redo them but I'm now on the fence about adding the CBR coils.
I await the collective wisdom of y'all

Re: Adding CBR coils to an '83
I cant comment on the CBR coils but basically a coil is a coil, If the ohms are the same as the stock 1100 coils I see no reason they shouldnt work. Coil swaps are nothing new, Ask Little Beaver about the Dodge Neon car coil pack swap I sent him......

I finally found a source of by the foot 7mm solid core plug wire, so I've got all the pieces now:
plug wire, new NGK resistor caps and '04 CBR coils.
Time to rewire!

The spare 1100 engine I have sitting in my garage has a set of Neon coils on it.

CBR coils are mounted on the factory brackets; the ballast resistor has been eliminated and the wire soldered and heat shrinked. Per Dan Filipi over at CGW, making a bracket to allow the shorted CBR coils to mount up in the original location.
Next up is making all new plug wires.

Glad the CBR coils are working out for you. Heres what the Dodge Neon coils look like for those who may be interested ( not trying to Hijack your thread)

The CBR coils are mounted, new plug wires were made from 7mm solid core wire and attached to new NGK plug caps.
Should be good to go!

if you are looking for a hotter spark,
why not do the relay mod. ?
it is the first mod you should have done,
it will take the load off the ignition, and direct the power where it is needed to the spark plugs without over loading your wiring and ignition parts.

I forget. I'll have a look at it when I pull the Virago out later this month to prep it for sale.littlebeaver wrote:What year is it Admin.?WingAdmin wrote:The spare 1100 engine I have sitting in my garage has a set of Neon coils on it.

Re: Adding CBR coils to an '83
ok, since honda doesn't make coils for the older goldwings anymore, i understand swapping to neon or cbr coils. now i've never been accused of being the sharpest tool in the shed so i was just wondering, both of these mods require removal of the ballast resistor? isn't the job of the resistor to regulate voltage to the coils so you don't burn them up prematurely?
WHAT IS THE SPEED OF DARK?

Re: Adding CBR coils to an '83
The resistor is not needed.
The CBR coil can be had from bike junk yards.
#MP08
From the following bike's as long as they are MP08 coils
CBR600
CBR900
VFR750
GL1500

Re: Adding CBR coils to an '83
My question about this is in researching this CBR coil switch, which I have done but have still other motor work to do. At any rate, locally we have a used motorcycle parts place here with many CBR coils on every single one I looked at the yellow wire is on the green spade on the 1/3 coil and the blue wire is on the green spade for the 2/4 coil in the picture of his coil wired and in the 83 brackets his wires are opposite of this. So my question is does it matter which way as long as your providing spark to the proper plugs of course.

Well coil on plugs certainly eliminates all the high-tension wire problems!
