Gl1100 ignition basics show and tell

Post by virgilmobile »

I'd like to show how the ignition system works.....simplified...
The Gl 1000-1200 ignition systems are very simple in design...Only a few parts are involved.
Some have changes between models but the basics remain the same....
Power to the coil and ignition module and a pulse coil...
Here's a schematic broken down to one coil. The second coil has the same wiring.
I am going to reuse a 33 year old set on a Kohler 20hp twin that uses points, thus the purpose of the bench test....

So,if you don't have spark...these are the minimum parts needed and where volts and ground are required...

Lovely. Always like your posts. Accept I have a primitive knowledge of the subject.

How do the ignition module and pulse coil work?

The module is an off-on switch?

What triggers the pulse coil?

Great demo, Sometimes we can get wrapped up in all the wiring involved but all of it can be eliminated for testing purposes with this simple setup. Is it a sticky, It should be.

The pulse trigger coil is a winding of very small wire. It has a metal core and the core is magnetized.
When the magnetic field is disturbed,it's energy is released into the winding producing a very small voltage.

The ignition module is a type of switch. When it receives the pulse/voltage,internal parts activate a heavy duty part that act like points.

The ignition coil, with 12 volts on the primary, gets pulsed by the module.Actually grounding the coil briefly at each pulse.
The pulse in the small winding is a collapsing magnetic field and is dumped into the large winding producing the spark.
The ignition coil windings are something like 1 rap/turn input to 1000 raps/turn output so for every volt discharged into the coil,1 thousand volts is output.

The pulse coil and module replace The old points and condenser system.

Very interesting and informative, thanks. Just a couple of questions. In your video, are the plugs themselves grounded and 2) does the pulse coil have voltage going to it through either the blue or the white wires that are connected to the spark unit? Just not sure how that magnet works.

where is the pulse coil mounted on these engines and what triggers it ? are there 2 of them or just one ?

On the GL1100 there's 2 of everything..
There mounted on the rear of the engine.
Other models may have them up front by the cam or crank shaft.
My 1500 has 2 attached to the crankshaft up front with a trigger wheel.
Here's a bit more reading iffin your so inclined.
viewtopic.php?t=17547

There triggered as the blade of the trigger wheel passes very close to the pulse coil pickup.

As far as the previous question..
Both plugs are electrically tied together by the engine..the engine is not used as a "ground" for the spark only as a conductor to the matching plug.
I can't verify if the pulse coils on the GL1100 have a (bias) voltage but I do know that the GL1200 does..When the pulse coil is unplugged from the GL1200,there appears about 2.5 volts across the 2 conductors feeding the pulse coil. When plugged back in it drops below 0.25 volts..This is a bias voltage..
I don't think the GL1100 uses this method.
The magnet...
It's actually built inside with the coil..
The metal core of the pulse coil protudes out the side and the coil wires are wrapped around it.When the trigger wheel passes very close to this protusion,it absorbed some of the magnetic field..when a magnetic field is disturbed (collapsed) it's energy is passed into the coil..Same method used by the charging systems.

no problem at all. just didn't know a thing about these ignitions other than that they have coils, wires, and spark plugs.
thanks for asking though.
but while we are on the subject ... if a person DID determine that the pulse coil was bad, does the engine have to be pulled or can it be removed/replaced with the engine in place ?

The pulse coils and whole assembly can be removed without pulling the engine.Rear wheel came off mine and is much easier to get to by removing the swingarm.
I did have to pull mine for a rebuild..The vacuum advance quit, mechanical advance was seized and the bearings rusted on the pulse coil mount. These problems shower as no change in timing as the engine was throttled up.It was stuck at 10° BTDC.

Just for testing.Swap the silver things. They are reversable. If the same one still smokes, replace it.

I can rebuild a motor or trans no problem but electric is my nemesis. Thanks to you we got her purring again. Now its time to get them low rpm studders out. Would really like to go with the 4 to 1 on carbs. Anybody got a set up for reasonable price?
