correct gear oil to use?

Post by shivsal »

Hi, I'm a little confused on the correct gear oil to use in my 82 goldwing aspencade. The manual reads sae 90 and the how to I was reading read sae 75w-90. Can someone please and thank you, shed some light on this. I live in southern Ontario, Canada.
thanks to those who reply as always.

75W-90 is 90 weight multiviscosity oil, and will work perfectly in your final drive.

The "75W" means the oil will act as 75 weight in winter (hence the W) when it is cold, but when it warms up (i.e. in normal riding temperatures), it will act as a 90 weight oil - which is what SAE 90 is. Unless you do a lot of riding in winter, and I doubt you do that in Brantford, you will be perfectly fine using the 75W-90 gear oil.

I would suggest that you use synthetic gear oil, as it is more resistant to the exceptional shearing forces encountered within the final drive, and will take longer to break down.

thank you for the reply. I will use the synthetic oil, as you suggested. As always great forum.

Does the gear oil of the 1983 GL1100 needs to be API GL-5, API GL-4 or those specifications are not important?

Thank you - Piero Bassi
