will gl1200 rims fit on gl1100

Post by evesdropper »

I have the option of buying the rims and front forks off a gl1200.
The forks and rims look like the ones on my buddies 83 gl1100.
Mine being a 82 the forks would be a upgrade as well as the rims.
If they do fit will I need the rotors and calipers as will.
I known the 83 will fit but not sure about the gl1200.
Thank you Mark

Get the entire triple tree and it will bolt on. IIRC, it even uses the same steering stem bearings.
Without replacing the tree, the 84 fork tubes are fatter and won't fit your 82 tree. Might have a fender fit issue too.

The TRAC anti-dive is a nice upgrade. I put the 83 forks/wheels on my 82.
I retrofitted my 82 calipers, since the 83's were linked (and different size pistons) and I didn't want that. You'll need to do the same.

Not sure if the rear wheel is a direct fit. I thought the 1200's had a 15" rear wheel.
If so, and it fits, that should hot rod your 82, with the smaller diameter rear tire = numerically higher effective gear ratio.
Quicker off the line, lower top speed (potentially). It will make your cruising speed RPM higher than before.
For an around town bike, that's an upgrade. For a highway long-distance cruiser, not so much. MPG will likely be lower than before.
When all else fails, RTFM!

Checking in to see if this was ever finished. Now that I'm closer to getting my project together my tunnel vision is clearing and I've started to look at the rest of my bike. It seems that at further inspection, friendly Frank force fed fido the front end at fifty, and not only kinked my fork tubes but neglected to mention it to me when I bought my projects. Looking to swap in a whole new fork assembly just to make it less painful and I'd like to upgrade to a gl1200. Thinking about swapping the whole tree onto my 83 gl1100 and would like to know how this worked out for the OP.

Welcome to the forum. We may never know the outcome as the op hasn't been back on since 2015. Unfortunately, too many people fail to reply back to finish their topics off.
As to your wanting to know if you can put a 1200 front end on you 83? Yes. But only if you put the complete front end on, trees(put in new tapered bearings), fork tubes and brake caliper mount brackets along with the wheel and rotors.

That is unfortunate.
I've been shopping on Ebay and 1200 complete triples are pretty common and in my price range. Would I have to swap the calipers and rims or can I get away with just the complete tree and fork assemblies mated with my 83 wheel and caliper?
See my thread "Down the Rabbit Hole...." for more info on the project if youd like.
