Speedometer Problems

Post by Tom Cates »

I have a 1983 Aspencade and my speedometer ,odometer and trip meter are no longer working correctly. The speedometer jumps from number to number but it is not correct for the speed I am doing. The odometer and trip meter work but are working at the incorrect speedometer rate. I am sure there is something broken at the front wheel which is creating this problem. Any help would be great

i had the same problem with my 83 aspy also. the speed read out on the display would be erratic and eventually stopped working altogether. what i had to do was replace the speedometer gear housing at the bottom of the front where it attaches to the wheel hub. if you take the front wheel off and remove the speedometer gear housing from the axle, you'll see a 2 prong metal ring over the top of a plastic gear. its that ring and plastic that meshes with the gear that's inside that housing which turns when the wheel turns and makes the electronic speed sensor that's bolted onto it read out your speed on your dash display. it might be that metal ring or the plastic or both that might have to replaced.

Tom
basicly this is what your speedo gear looks like inside.......

on that piece of plastic sits a metal ring with 2 tabs on it. there is an article that wingadmin wrote on this site somewhere that explains how to replace it. let me see if i can find the link to it and it will show you what you'll need and how to replace it. ok, i found it......scroll about a third of the way down the page and you'll see the pics of the parts look like inside the speedo gear box.....Read more:

viewtopic.php?t=18710&start=75

once you read this article and see what it looks like, you can take yours apart and see if any of the tabs on the plastic gear or on the metal ring are broken off. if they are, let me know and i'll see if i can find the parts for you.

1st time using your expertise!... My '83 GL1100 (Naked model) speedometer works well, but the odometer and trip meter are not working. Is there an easy fix?

Sure, replace the broken plastic gear in the speedometer. (Sometimes they just need cleaning)
Finding one might be the problem. Speedometer shops are pretty scarce these days.
