GL1100 windshield nuts

Post by RodL »

I picked up a 1983 GL1100 Intersate and I am going through and cleaning up the wiring mess and everything else that the previous owner has done. In doing so I noticed that two of the nuts that are holding down the windshield are regular nuts.

Is there any good place to get those funny "D" shaped windshield nuts without paying a minor fortune? I found a couple on EBay but they want $10 for each. I know I can just use regular nuts and such, but I am one of those type of guys that like to have all the stuff original if possible!

I figure it is a good time of year here in Minnesota to tear it down and get it cleaned up for spring.

There are several big parts recyclers on eBay.
While they sell the windshield trim, they don't bother listing the hardware.
I would contact one of them to see what they would sell them to you for.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

RodL, you can find them here..........http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-NOS-GL110 ... nH&vxp=mtr for a few dollars less than 10.00 each. i know they aren't cheap, but they are obsolete and getting harder to find. when i had to replace a few of mine on my aspy, i simply used regular metric nuts. it wont hurt anything to use them, if that is your "last resort".

I dropped one of those stupid things when removing my windshield, and it disappeared into the fairing somewhere. I heard a metal clank as it landed, but after a good hour of searching, I couldn't find it. I ended up using a standard metric flange nut and it worked fine. At the end of the year I disassembled the front wheel for something unrelated and found that D-nut sitting in between the forks, trapped by the fork brace. No idea how it managed to stay there all season long. I put it back in place of the flange nut. I also used some silicone based adhesive to glue the D-nuts to the back of the fairing so that they stayed in place, and didn't fall off when the bolts were removed in future.

The only problem with flange nuts is that you have to hold them in place when tightening. The D nuts are that shape for a reason: to prevent them from turning, because they rest against the plastic:

wingadmin, let me ask you a question....using a regular metric nut, the ones with the little "grabbers" that are on the back of them, wouldn't they grab the plastic and hold them in place while tightening them? just a thought. i don't have one to take a pic of it to show it to you, but im sure you know which ones im talking about.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about these:

Yes...but you have to get them close enough to the plastic first before they do that. The "D" nuts won't turn as soon as you start the threads into them.

I got tired of dropping them down into the fairing. I used a plastic glue to hold those little buggers in place.

I have not heard from rodl so I think I have a couple of these in a drawer that I am not using.

I think it worth noting that the mounting brackets for both the speakers and the gauge cluster have what I'll call "ledges" or "stays" that press against the D nuts to keep them in place such that the speakers or gauges don't need to be removed when pulling the mirrors, windshield etc.

Thanks to Admin's suggestion, I'll be adding a drop or two of silicone glue next assembly.

Re: GL1100 windshield nuts - HELP!

HELP! Adding to the end of this thread. 82 GL-1100i WITH 3 gage panel above dash area of fairing. I took windshield off to polish out scratches (Arm&Hammer toothpaste worked!), dropped a D-Nut, couldn't find, found NOS online and waited for arrival, placed magnet to catch it when I dropped it again and have had a HELL of a time just getting the new one in place. I've probably dropped it 30 times a try over the past week, get frustrated and put my tools away for another day. I cannot remove the gage brace as the top 2 mounting holes are POP-RIVETED through the fairing and there's just no room to drill them out. I've tried sticky grease, warm chewing gum on the end of a screwdriver, silicone RTV (I made a mess) and magnets to get the bugger in place thru the gap between the gage panel and the top of the fairing... I'm now looking for ideas on alternate approaches to getting that silly nut back in place so I can install the windshield and ride again... Any ideas? I'd rather not remove the fairing just to get those damn pop-rivets out but I'm afraid that may be my next step... Thanks in Advance, folks!
This equipment's shiny side is to remain pointed up while in use...

After losing one AGAIN (it dropped somewhere, I know not where), I decided to fix it once and for all, and epoxied the damn things in place, so they never came off again. I used a strong magnet to get it into place and hold it there until it caught the threads.

Incidentally, I found the missing nut a year later, sitting on the top of my front fender, between the forks, caught on the fork brace!

Thanks. I used about 5 drops of Gorilla Glue and 24 hours with the nut held in place with the bolt "washered up" to clamp it. I was afraid I wouldn't get the nut centered 'just right' but mother Honda is pretty good with fit and finish and everything lined-up this morning with very little fiddling. I read the previous posts about using epoxy but I just don't have any space to get to the backside between the metal gauge brace and the fairing. I'll leave that mod for the day I take the fairing apart and drill out those pop rivets holding the top of the metal brace... Not anticipated with any enthusiasm on my part.
