Rear master cylinder for 82' GL 1100
Rear master cylinder for 82' GL 1100
Hello all.
I have recently got my 82' GL1100 project going and running on the road, but the back brakes are not working. I've looked into it and the master cylinder is trashed. With a huge crack in it and the banjo bolt threads are stripped. So I decided its time to just invest my efforts in something new to install. I have looked everywhere to find a new or used rear master cylinder for my 82' gl1100, but it doesn't seem to exist. Does anyone know where I may find one, or has anyone had experience adapting it to a new model brake cylinder? Any help is appreciated

Here's a thread about adapting an 1800 rear master to the 1100 http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=44934 and I think there's a forum thread on adapting a Valk rear master somewhere on the internet, too, but I don't have it bookmarked.
That second link is to a 1000 rear master, not an 1100. Pretty low price for a NOS, though.

Strange that there are so many available for 75-79 but just the one for the 80-83s.

Yeah, they have the description wrong.SnoBrdr wrote:

I don't know why 1100 rear masters are hard to come by. When I got my old bike, someone had already robbed the rear master off it and it took a few months of looking to find a decent rebuildable used one that wasn't over 100 bucks.

I've seen people use those generics they sell on EBay but have never tried one myself.spiralout wrote:Yeah, they have the description wrong.SnoBrdr wrote:

Re: Rear master cylinder for 82' GL 1100
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I did manage to find a guy who has an 81' GL1100 and he say he will rebuild the cylinder for me and warranty it for me at a great price. But neither of us are sure if it will for my 82' GL1100. Do any of you guys know if they will switch out OK?

You could always check a parts fiche to be sure.
In fact I woulddo that before you spend the $$ on getting one rebuilt.

Re: Rear master cylinder for 82' GL 1100
the 83 is more problematic to source parts for than the 82 and 82 is bad enough!

Re: Rear master cylinder for 82' GL 1100
Note on the 82 I don't think the rear and right front brake link together I think that started in 83 if your rear brake line goes right to caliper they are not interlock then you can use a master off a gl1500. Only difference is the bore size 14mm on the 1500 16mm on the 1800 and parts are readily available I have a master off a 82 I bought off eBay seller said it was off a 83 and it wasn't it's ugly but the bore is good I just didn't send it back if you need it let me know but the swap is the best way.

Re: Rear master cylinder for 82' GL 1100
The master cylinder on my 83 was seized up and I found an 82 on ebay. After trying the rebuild discovered the difference in the bore. I was wondering why the brake line connector's threads don't seem to fit. Will I have to run a new rigid line? I know the 82s don't have the front and rear calipers linked together but was hoping it would still work. Any thoughts?
