Hi fellow GL1100 owners. Marcus posting here from Calgary, Alberta for the first time. I have been involved with motorcycles since 1970. I picked up a mostly all intact 1980 Interstate last year from a local resident which was a bit of a rat bag when I got it but has been coming along quite nicely these past several months. I'm returning it back to stock condition with the help of ebay and some motorcycle swap meets in this area. I have enjoyed reading many of the posts on this site and have learned what to do and NOT to do when rebuilding or servicing this bike. It should be back on the road in about another month from now. Thanks for operating and maintaining this wonderful website as a resource for preserving these great old Wings.

Thanks Sparky. I've noticed everyone here on this site are pretty friendly and willing to help a Goldwing owner if they can. This is the first shaft drive, water cooled bike I've worked on and even though it's a very sophisticated and complex machine it seems well engineered and not hard to work on if you have the factory shop manual and a network of fellow enthusiasts like the helpful people on this site.

I don't know how many miles are on yours mine has 58000 timing belts are a must do. If you don't know the service history won't hurt to change them and have the radiator flushed. Cheap insurance your motor will live long 8-)

Thanks for the advice Sparky. This bike doesn't have the original speedometer on it. A 1980 model should have one that only goes to 80 MPH. This one is from a 82 or 83 GL1100 because it goes to 130 MPH. I don't know what the true mileage is on this bike so I decided to just do everything on the service schedule in the owners manual. I've seen several posts here warning about failure to change belts so new belts are definitely on my "to do" list before any riding. So far I have removed the swing arm and drive shaft, cleaned and re-greased all the splines from the transmission output shaft to the splines in the rear wheel hub and reassembled everything. I set the valve clearance, changed the oil and filter, the air filter, replaced both the clutch and choke cables. The cooling system service is one of the next projects I'll do. I found the tip on GoldwingDocs very helpful about making the 2 rad hoses for the bike by cutting one Napa car radiator hose #7733 in half. A few more things to attend to after that, and then that should be everything necessary for the first stage of it's resurrection.

Something else I did was move the raditor fill neck from the top to the front of the radiator there a pain to get to. This is my 83 8-)

My '82 GL1100I has a speedometer that goes to 150mph. (Not sure I will ever see if the needle goes that far, though.) The former owner did not indicate that it had been replaced, so I wonder if yours is from an '83 or mine was simply an option.

I had a look at mine again just now and the scale on the instrument face actually does go a bit higher than 130 mph, but 130 is the highest number printed on the speedo face. I guess it would be the same as yours cyberlon and read to about 150mph at the very upper limit. My speedo is definitely from a newer Honda because even the pictures in my factory owners manual for a 1980 clearly shows 80 mph as the maximum indicated speed. Yes, you are correct Sparky, the 83 Aspencade had a digital dash and not the analog gauges like the Interstate or Standard did.
