Disconnect the battery.
Disconnect the wire to the starter. Be careful you do not twist the bolt that goes into the starter. If you do --you break the inside wire to that post.
Remove the two bolts that secures the starter to the motor.
Slide the back out to the rear. Pull the front out of it's hole.
starter removed.

You may have to remove the shift lever to facilitate starter removal. Mark the lever position before you remove it, makes it a lot easier to install correctly. Excellent how to from this site: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=259

What are you replacing it with..if aftermarket you may have to pull out the gear in the case the aftermarket splines don't always fit the old gear so you have to use the one that came with the starter..also some starter won't fit past the rear inside exhaust bolt and it has to be removed. there were two lengthens of starters..and the longer one is a little harder to get out.

Much easier to find the right spline then to change the gear. I have a Rebuilt O.E.M. starter. I rebuilt it myself. PM me if your interested. Regards, Johnny.

Not hard for most..but some guys have issues with it not sure why..if you take the old starter and try to fit the new gear on to it and it goes on easily..then you might be OK to leave the old gear in place and just slip the new starter in there. Worth a shot to see..

Just a update on my starter replacement on my 82 Goldwing. All I can say is easy peasy! Came out no probem and the replacement went back in no problem. My only question is. Has anyone ever had to replace the ring gear where the starter spline slides into?
