GL1100I starter issue

Post by RodL »

I had a starter go out and replaced it with a new one. After about 2 weeks, I had it lock up. My brother and I took it apart and found one of the planetary gears had 3 broken teeth. We took the good parts from my old one (it just had no brushes left) and put everything together and it worked just fine. Then about 3 weeks later as I am leaving work, I went to start the bike and got the dreaded click, click, click when I pushed the starter button. My brother pulled the starter again today, and it spun just fine out of the bike. He put it back in and the bike works just fine....

Ok what am I missing here. I am now a little paranoid about taking the bike out!!

could be lots of things, hydrolocked cylinder(s), loose connection in the circuit, bad ground to battery, bad starter switch, stuck solenoid. Next time do you turn your petcock off..if not hydrolock maybe..loosen plugs and try again with stop switch on off, jump across the two big bolts on the solenoid..if that works issue with solenoid or starter switch or wiring to, if nada..battery issue/circuit issues,

If hydrolocked can bend a rod..if you don't relive pressure..loosen plugs And gas in cylinder plus spark from plugs = BOOM/FIRE SO BE CAREFUL!! STOP/RUN SWITCH ON OFF!!!
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

I will keep those in mind.. I am going to install starter relay anyway just to eliminate that. I can get the bike going by having someone push me, so I do not think there is any hydrolock going on..
