How long will timing belts last?

Post by fearman111 »

Recently got a 1983 Aspencade, previous owner had done the belts 2 years ago.

How often must they be replaced?

about 15 years should be quite safe.

30 years makes most of us very nervous.

IF, the bike were driven enough, it is suggested by Honda to change them at 100,000 miles.... but most bikes, don't see that many miles even in 30 years.

To be honest, more damage has been done changing them, than leaving them alone.

IF, you feel the PO did change them two years ago, you are good to go, just ride the bike and enjoy the wind in your face.

On my '94SE, they were changed at 57,000 miles simply because of age. When I looked at the old belts, I could not find a single blemish on them...
So, I spent about $100 bux to get them changed, just to make my sleep easier at night.

Here what you need consider:
IF they break, the engine is toast.
Now, figure that reality to the cost of replacement.

And, since I JUST did the belt on my Toyota, and have done the 'Wing as well as many others, it ain't that hard to do, so do it.
