Oil filter O-rings ticking me off again ...

Post by kvdsr »

Picked up a match to my '82 1100 Wing, and noticed an oil leak down by the oil filter/oil plug region. Not sure exactly where it's coming from, and I wanted to change the oil anyway so I thought that'd be a good place to start. Last time I changed oil filters on my other 1100, the big O-ring included with the filter was too big, and I ended up ordering an OEM.

This time, the little O-ring included with the filter looked oversized. I tried to put it on anyway and scalped it off. The used little O-ring that I took off seemed like maybe it was undersized, and possibly a cause of the leak.

So I may need an o-ring somewhere in between. Does anyone know what size O-ring I need, or will I have to order another OEM?

Thanks

I would order from your dealer the OEM. They just are not that expensive.

Thanks for the reply.

My problem is this: I want to ride my bike ASAP with the nice weather, and right now my bike is sitting up on the center stand with no oil in it. It took my dealer over four days to get the part last time, and by that time the weather is supposed to turn crappy (again!)

One of my friends told me that he had found a description of the OEM O-ring as "15x2.5" and I am contacting the hardware stores in my area. So far, nobody can match that description to an O-ring.

Take the tube and filter housing with you to an ACE hardware, been my experience they won't have the metric size but by test-fitting you can usually find an o-ring that is "Close enough". :)

WIX 24940. Comes with the o-rings. I've been using these filters and o-rings for years on my CB750, and now my 1100. I've never had a leak. Should be available at most parts stores.

I did find the metric 15x2.5 o-ring at Dorans Hardware in Madison. I bought a couple extra just in case - for 45 cents it's a good investment.

Next time I will try the Wix 24940, since the Fram I used failed me this time, and the other brand I used last time (?) had the big O-ring wrong.

Thanks to all
