Blinkers don't latch 1983 aspencade

Post by twinn »

I have 2 problems with my new to me 1983 aspencade, first the blinkers won't blink or stay engaged, when I pull or push the blinker button it centers right up again. Is there supposed to be a mechanical detent there or is it electronic? Secondly when I first rode it I didn't realize the air suspension leaked at both ends, was riding with no air in the shocks, hit a big pothole and bottomed the front suspension out, and my MPH LCD went whacky. Now it is only on when it feels like it, goes from very light to normal illumination as it wishes. MPH is always correct when it does read, it just isn't on all the time, goes from fuzzy to off. This ever happen to anyone else? Do I have to get a whole new dash or does anyone fix these lcds? Where would I find a replacement dash? Thanks in advance.

It may not be the dash, it is more likely the speed sensor. There is a procedure in the Honda Service Manual to check both. Don't bother asking your Honda dealer for parts, they do not exist.
As to the turn signal switch, it may be the cancelling device in the switch pod has somehow locked "on". You'll need to disassemble to check.

I'm pretty convinced the display is fubar, it changes resolution just sitting on the stand with the key on. I guess I still don't understand if there is a mechanical latch to hold the blinker on, or if it pulls in electronically? thanks.

Mechanical. Operated by a solenoid.

Do you happen to have led bulbs in the turn signals? I changed the front bulbs back to regular 1157 bulb and then they operated correctly. You loose the power to activate solenoid so it clicks or cancels.

Two different things. Bulbs blinking are separate from the switch latching "ON".
The flasher circuit (NOT a 'solenoid') is the same as most other bikes, certainly the same as all Hondas.
The self-cancelling feature is a separate circuit, receiving signal from the wheel speed sensor, and sending signal to the solenoid in the left switch housing. One does not affect the other in any electrical way.

I would suspect the sensor as well but check the fuse connections to be sure they are not corroded.

Finally got the blinkers to blink with an electronic flasher, but they still won't latch in and stay on. Wondering if it could have something to do with the auto canceling device, maybe it is holding the solenoid so the blinkers won't latch up. Found this piece(hopefully pictured) in by the back of the weight, it isn't connected to anything, but there are wires going to it. Any help on what it might be, thanks in advance, twinn.
