GL1100 Carburetor Throttle Linkage and Wandering Springs - HOW and WHAT?

Post by goldwingingit »

Good evening from Seattle everyone!

I'm a new member, first time poster, but I have been frequenting this forum as a guest for the past two weeks. Thank you for all the resources and tips here - so far, they have been great!

I'm in the process of restoring a GL1100i that has been sitting for approximately 11 years. It's a grandfather alright.

I spent the past two days disassembling and cleaning the carburetors. I've cleaned a few carbs before, but these are quite tricky so I am going slow to go fast - it was an absolute nightmare to get these out, and so when I put them in, I want them to stay there.

Now, I am currently rebuilding them and have hit a snag I can't get past. This is specifically with thethrottle linkage between the individual carbs. First of all, I swear that this factory service manual was written by an absolute sadist. (I recall the process of removing the gas tank. "Remove the gas tank back and pull it out the rear". Yeah, sure, buddy.)

And again, this wonderful piece of documentation (Section 4-12 of the service manual) has me stuck:

"Insert the throttle linkage between the plain washers as shown".

"Solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
"Develop a form of clean, safe and free fusion energy."
"Establish a colony on mars."

Those washers are pushed together tighter than a frowning church grandma's lips! I can separate them with a flat screw driver, but when the time comes to jam the throttle linkage in there, it's too god damn thick and then the screwdriver slips. Or it's not aligned. Or the screwdriver slips. Or the screwdriver didn't slip, and it is aligned, but then there is no space for the linkage. :D :D :D I must have tried twenty times with all the tools at my disposal and I don't want to bend the other fuel lines nearby. How the heck are you supposed to get that in there?

Your advice, cynicism, etc., is much appreciated. :D

As a side note, I also found two springs wandering around after everything was cleaned. I wonder where those are supposed to go? :? :? :? I'm pretty sure they don't belong IN the carburetors, probably somewhere in the linkages. But lord knows I can't figure that out. I even read through what you have here but no mention of em. :O

There are springs in the air screws all four of them, at the linkage you are fighting with, the accelerator shaft, all 4 cut offs, Look at a carb fiche on a dealer's parts site may help you..

http://shop.westernhonda.com/fiche_sect ... veh=132954.

I'd try putting it together w/o the spring then add the spring and nut.

Yeah removing it seems like the best step. After that they'll have to be bench synched!

As for the springs, it ain't those springs. I'm familiar with the individual carbs, but it's the linkages between them that I've never seen before. Pretty sure the errant springs go somewhere between them.

I don't think it's these ones either.

Where else are there springs?

Those can be a PAIN! I have had luck pushing a small open ended wrench in the space first. I ground down an old 10mm for this job. But you can put a screwdriver in the adjusting screw so it does not turn and loosen the locknut. Back out the adjustment screw and count the number of turns so you can put back to the same spot. A piece of masking tape on the screwdriver shaft with a line drawn on helps to keep track of the turns. This will allow the spring to give ya enough room. Put the screw back to the original position and secure lock nut. And I agree with goldwingingit. If the "leftover" springs are very thin and not very "springy" they fit as shown in his diagram. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for the tip! I was actually able to get it together easily after disassembling the "jam" part, but yeah those washers are tight.

Figured out where the springs go, too. But who the heck knows how they jumped off in the first place!

All in all, I think the rebuild was a success. I salvaged one felt washer, the other one was toast.

Carbs are set aside for now until the tank is cleaned and a million other little jobs are done!

Having the same occurrence of two leftover linkage springs… no mention in any manual or Randakk guide - any ideas? Where did yours go OP?

this thread is 5 years old so the OP may or may not be active, but if you put up a pic of the springs someone might be able to help you.
