Best replacement stator?

Post by Tipsy McStaggers » Thu Jan 11, 2018 10:25 am

Just bought a 1980 gl1100 that has a fried stator. What and where is the best place to buy everything I need to complete this job. Can I get everything from one place? Pretty much need stator, reg/rec, gaskets, timing belts and any advice on what else I should look into doing while the engine is out. Thanks

NO..belts from Napa or Amazon, stator do a search here several brands have good reps..

while the engine is out clean/rebuild the carbs, clean the neutral switch, flush the water system, set the clutch tension, maybe pull the clutch and check it..for wear, check water pump for wiggle..replace if it wiggles at all, look for leaks all around, replace o rings on water tubes,
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
RB

Thanks, ended up ordering parts and gaskets from 3 different suppliers, was lucky and got free shipping on everything. Went with all Rick's electrical components (stator, reg/rec, solenoid) and k&l belts. So stay away from the Gates belts? They cost about half the ones I bought, was having buyers remourse after I noticed.

No, Gates belts are very good (I believe they are OEM Manufacturer, too)

NAPA and Amazon sell Gates. Cheaper from Amazon (like half price) as opposed to getting them over the counter at your local Auto Parts....
They say 98% of all Hardleys ever made are still on the road..... The other 2% made it home.
(I stole this from somebody on another GW site...)

The Honda OEM belts are actually just Gates belts with the "Gates" stamp replaced with "Honda" :) As I recall, Gates also makes the Napa bets, but they are priced slightly higher.

So yes, absolutely buy the Gates belts for half the price over the Honda OEM.

Timing Belts

GL1000 & GL1100
Gates - #5119 or #T274 (2ea.)
NAPA - #250274 (2 ea.)
Goodyear - #40274 (2 ea.)

Sent the over priced belts back for refund. Thanks for the heads up, gonna save $50. Funny thing, just past the Gates plant today, there located just outside Atlanta.
