gl1100 stator problems

Post by Bigsteeves »

Good morning.
I fixed up my 1980 gl1100i last year and took it across Canada in the summer. It was all going great until around Regina. My stator went. My uncle came and got me from Calgary and we pulled the engine and put a new one in. Great right? common problem right?

Well went to bc, then back to sask. When I left heading east again my stator went again by Brandon Manitoba!!!

I have ordered another new stator, and a new rectifier. Where I am pulling the engine again I will also be jetting the carbs, they were synced for my straight pipes but not jetted.

Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be to cause it to go twice within 1500 miles? both times were after a long haul on a dirt sask highway.

I check the connection where they usually go and they were not burnt or discoloured.

I am trying to make a list of the possible problems/solutions.
1) bad new stator
2) 3 prong connecter (bypassing this time)
3) Rectifier
4) I put a new fancy battery, one mechanic I met on my trip said that could be part of the problem.
5) Straight pipes, sound amazing, minimal back firering, temp ok. ???

thank you for your time and hopefully help.

1st one because it just decided it was time to die, 2nd because it was probably aftermarket and they don't have a good track record.

When you changed it the first time, where did you get the replacement from?

If you aren't having fun doing it, find something else to do.
