Starting issues - no clicking, whirring, nothing :-(

Post by tallnwise » Sat Feb 24, 2018 3:10 pm

Hi guys,

Been trying to diagnose starting issues. When I hit the red button, I get no clicks from my solenoid. I have a new handle bar switch. Just installed a brand new solenoid. I am electrically challenged. I also, tried my old switch.

Starter whirs if I try jumping it directly with a battery pack. Battery is full charged. All my other electricals work -- horn, lights, etc.

Tried doing some testing with multimeter based on advise from an other forum:
In the below thread it was indicates I should have 12v between the yellow/red (positive) and green/red (negative) wires when I press the starter button.
- When I put the red probe against the yellow/red wire and black probe against the battery negative and press the starter -- I get 12v.
- When I put the red probe against the yellow/red wire and black probe against the green/red wire and press the starter -- get nothing
- When I put the black probe against the green/red wire and red probe against the battery positive and press the starter -- get nothing

And ideas / thoughts to help me out?

Thanks Dan.

Then you are not getting ground to the solenoid through the green/red wire. Does the neutral light work? Have you tried pulling in the clutch?

Should have updated the post -- pulling the clutch got her started.

Thanks much.

Ok..replace the diode...It's attached to the harness by your left knee.Or close..It's open.that is if the neutral lamp does work

Thanks for that. Will replace the diode. The neutral light does work.

Dan.

By the way..If you want to confirm the diode is the problem, short the 2 contacts..When the neutral lamp is on,it should crank up.Leaving it shorted will cause the neutral lamp to light every time the clutch lever is pulled in.

Thanks will give that a shot. In any case, my neutral light is always on *_* -- neutral switch issue, do not want to flex the frame to get to it :-)
