Problem "Rear Shock Bump Stops" 83 gl1100

Post by Aspe83 » Sun Mar 18, 2018 8:48 pm

Hi All, I am installing new seals and springs for the rear shocks on my 83 gl1100 Aspencade. After removing the springs I noticed the bump stops were basically disintegrated. The new stops I got are as hard as rocks and barely go over the shaft. The problem is the fixed nut on the shaft that the bump stops rest on and is the nut you tighten the top of the shock on when the spring is compressed. Does this nut come off the shaft, and if so how do you get it off?? It seems like it's fixed on there!!
Thanks Charlie

Yes that nut comes off. I spent 20 minutes yesterday getting mine off. I held the rod with a vice grip and screwed the nut off.
I did scour the rod but it should not be a problem as it is on the top and goes no-where,
The bump I drilled out a little to make it go on easier. Yes they do get spongy/dissolve. That is why they need changed.

#8 shows that nut. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=36307

I love this site.. Thank You so much for the info.. I used a micro fiber towel, vise grips and liquid wrench.. nut came right off!! Did score the shaft a tiny bit but like you said it's at the top and shouldn't harm anything.. Again thanks for the info and link, it sure helped me a lot!! Charlie

Post a thread after you have ridden the refurbished shocks a short piece. Let others know if it is worth it. Post where you got your parts.

I still have not completed mine. Today was the day but I got called to help move a friend's daughter from an apt to her new to her new house.
