GL1100 Front Cowl glued to inner panel

Post by Darmoad »

Greetings all,
I am looking for some help. I am in the process of respraying my ride since it was damaged in an act of vandalism. The problem is that now when my friend removed the front cowl and attempted separating the inner panel from the outer, he found it to be glued together. Was this standard practice? Was there a reason it was glued? Is there a way to separate the two safely to continue with repairs and painting?

Regards,
Darmoad.

I've never heard of someone pulling them apart - I suspect they are bonded (ABS cement) and not glued, and cannot be separated without permanent damage. Usually when a fairing is damaged, it's either repair from the outside if possible, or replace.

Hi Darmoad. I'm in the process of repairing my fairing that had damage as well as speaker holes that were cut into the inner panel. The two pieces are glued together and do not come apart so don't try to separate them! If you look all around the perimeter of the fairing you'll see what looks like little plastic rivets that hold the inner shell to the outer shell. These are plastic dowel pins that hold the two halves together in alignment during the manufacturing process while the bonding adhesive dries. Honda never intended these parts to ever come apart again. Be prepared to spend a lot of time tracing each crack with a small dremel tool cutting a deep V into the plastic the full length of each break. For an excellent repair compound use the ABS slurry trick other members here have made with ABS plastic shavings and ABS cement mixed together. It works great! I've got about 80% of my repairs finished now and the fairing is very strong despite all the cracks I have had to fix so far.
