Starting issues?

Post by BillyC » Sat Apr 14, 2018 9:51 am

Last year my gl wouldn't start when it was hot. Starter would wind over a revolution or two and cram out like a dead battery. Replaced battery. Problem persisted. Never found a cause. This spring I have the same problem. One or 2 revolutions of the starter and it stops and drags everything down like a dead battery. Have hooked up to 2 different jumper packs, and tried 2 different automotive batterys with the same outcome. Should I be chasing starter issues? Or wire corrosion? Thanks for any input

It's the starter, been there and done that on my first wing. You might be able to fix yours. I think there is a tutorial on starter repair.

More often than not the starter brushes are worn out. Starter with bad brushes pull a horrendous amount of current. Nice thing is it's a cheap and easy fix....

Last time my 1100 did that the current draw melted the plastic internals of the Starter relay ('solenoid') and I had to replace it, too.
They say 98% of all Hardleys ever made are still on the road..... The other 2% made it home.
(I stole this from somebody on another GW site...)

Thanks. I had a feeling you guys would say starter. I'm low on resources. My garage is occupied with a 26 ford right now and the body of said ford is on my trailer being used as a table. I have to be surgical with my repairs as I'm not doing them in the garage. When I get a chance to pull the starter ill update you guys
