GL1100 Clutch or trans issue

Post by Darshon »

I took my 81 gl1100 out today and once over 40 mph if I pull the clutch in I get a sound and can feel it clanking. If I release the clutch it is not clanking. It does not matter what gear and just below 40 mph it stops happening. The clutch has been slipping and the bike sat for a while before I got it. I replaced the carbs and changed oil, set valves, etc. Runs very well. But suddenly this clanking noise above 40 and when the clutch is pulled in. Even in neutral if above 40 mph. What would cause this? Would replacing the clutch fix this or is it some thing more severe. I would describe the sound like a marble or two banging around.

If it had something to do with the clutch it wouldn't matter what speed, it would be RPM related. I suspect it is a drive shaft problem.

Yes, a universal joint would be a good candidate. When it's under load from the engine, it's tightened up, but when you pull the clutch in, the wheel is flinging it around. If it's clanking, and if it is the universal joint, there's a good chance is so far gone that it's close to doing damage (if not already). Definitely check it - just a simple driveline lash check would be a good start.

Is it possible that the clip came off where the drive shaft meets the pto shaft on the engine? It only makes the noise when I pull in the clutch above 40 mph and I can feel something banging around when it happens.

I should also mention this has never even slightly had an issue like this and I did have the swing arm off to replace vacuum advance not too long ago.

It is not the drive shaft. It sounds like it is coming from the stator area. I put it on a stand and ran up to speed. Under no real load like that, the issue is happening a little with the clutch released, but a lot worse with th clutch pulled.

Was that in gear or in neutral?

It was in gear this time, but it happens in neutral if going over 40 on the road.

From everything you've described, it sounds 100% like driveline - output shaft, universal joint, driveshaft spline, etc. Again, I'd check the driveline for excessive lash.

I saw the phrase, "trans issue" and I so wanted to see WingAdmin wearing a dress.

I cannot tell you how disappointed I am.
