Kickback and backfire 1983 gl1100

Post by dingdong »

I am working on a 1983 gl1100. When starting, sometime it starts fine and other times there is a kickback causing the starter to stall and sometime there is a backfire as well just as though the timing were off. I realize the timing is not adjustable on the 1100 so what might be causing this??? Carbs have been cleaned and serviced due to a fuel leak at the crossover tube between #2/4 carbs and the starter has been rebuilt. This kickback was happening prior to fuel leak.

belts off a tooth +/- keeping valve open?? valve not adjusted properly?? backfires = valve open at the wrong time with spark..

The backfire occurs just as the engine first fires up and it only pops once through the carbs. After that it runs great. ???

Maybe a small gas leak into one cylinder and it pops from wasted spark??? IS it popping out the carb or exhaust?
