Oil leak and burning oil

Post by Ta_purry » Sun May 27, 2018 11:27 am

I recently just purchased a 1983 GL1100 and I’m having some issues with it leaking and burning oil. This is my first motorcycle so I honestly don’t know too much about the ins and outs of the engine quite yet so I’m looking to see if you guys could give me some help. Below I attached a picture of where the oil leaks onto the ground over the space of about 12 hours. So yeah it’s leaking quite a bit. Where is the leak occuring and what do I need to do to fix it? Also, after riding the bike it always smokes from the right side of the engine and I’m wondering what this issue might be as well. Can anyone help me?

Smokes from the right side of the ENGINE?...or out the exhaust? Looks to me that it's leaking on both sides. I'm going to take a SWAG (scientific wild-assed guess) that the valve cover gaskets are leaking and when you use the sidestand oil is getting onto the right header. Start by giving the engine a cleaning underneath and have a look. There's a weep hole on the left underside where you have an oil puddle...if it leaks coolant or oil the waterpump needs attention.

After you clean the engine good. Take some white foot powder and put on the engine. When it leaks it will leave a trail to the leak.

My recommendation as well. Buy a can of brake cleaner, take it out on the road somewhere you don't care (i.e. not your own driveway) and hose down the engine with the brake clenaer. It will dissolve all the accumulated oil and grime, and wash it off, so the engine is nice and clean before you use the talcum powder.
