wont rev past 5k

Post by duckem » Sat Jun 09, 2018 6:40 pm

Hello guys
Finally getting back working on my 82 gl1100 aspy. Brief history first, new timing belts, carbs torn down and cleaned, new carb kits, floats @ 15.5 mm +/- .5 mm (checked 3 times lol), bench tested no float leakage, air idle screws set at 2 turns out (read multiple posts stating 1.5 turns out to 3 turns out so i went with 2), carbs back in, intakes on, "O" rings secure, cables on , hit starter she fires up no problem, idles good @1k, synchronized carbs with 4 gauge synchronizer (#1 was way off), start checking things no leaks, lil smoke (white) from exhaust, check temps on exhaust manifolds after a few min ranging between 230f to 285f.

Now the problem :
When i throttle up gently it will go to bout 5k then popping like small backfires from exhaust and wants to die off.
When i romp on it a little she boggs and wants to die off.

After some research im leaning towards timing being off 1 tooth or so but before i pull all that off i want to make sure im on the right track.

Any help would be appreciated
Great forum by the way

Thanks
Duckem

My first guess would be the cam timing is off.

Thanks Dave

Pulled timing covers and sure enough timing marks on left side (2&4) was off 1 tooth.
Have it spot on now gonna put everything back together and fire it up hopefully tomorrow.
Hope this takes care of it.

Thanks

Well didn't fix it hmm
Seems little better but still won't rev past 4 to 5k and romping on throttle will only go to 1.5 to 2k then die off

Have you checked the fuel flow from the pump? Did you set the floats with them just resting on the pin or with the carbs upside down? Sounds like the belts might be too tight also.

Floats set at 15.5mm with carb standing upright on intakes floats barely touching pin.
I did however press down slightly on the tensioners for the belts when i tightened them up, Would that make a difference in the timing?
As far as the fuel pump flow how would i check that?

Thanks

The belt tension won't affect timing, just make the tensioners whine if they are too tight.
Test the fuel pump by attaching a hose to the outlet, into a container and start the engine. It should pump 15oz. in 1 minute at 3000 RPM.
