Charging Question

Post by Hoosier Jack »

I believe that I have a battery problem as it is having trouble holding 12v. The service manual says that to test the stator you need continuity between all three of the yellow wires coming out of it. I do have continuity, so is that definitive? Not that it matters but the stator is only about 2 years and maybe 5-6,000 miles and I got it from a good source.

Going to have the battery load tested today to see what that shows. If it passes I'll look at the reg/rec

Check for continuity between the yellow wires and ground. If you have continuity, the stator is bad.

All three wires when connected to the battery ground have continuity. OMG, what a job ahead.

It is easier to put a poor boy alternator on.

I'm going to read up on the poor boy. One quick question about that, do I loose my lower fairing doing that?

Edit: No need to answer that, I just looked at a tutorial. The conversion is not quite the task of removing the motor, but still could be a PIA.

Was the stator disconnected from the bike when you measured it to ground? If not, disconnect it and re-test. You can get reading to ground thru bike circuitry.

Yes. I actually had bypassed the old connector and soldered the connections. Had to cut them to test. Missed that step at first. No continuity. Oh well. Gold Witch strikes again.
